يتميّز هذا الشكل الموسيقي بقدرته الفائقة على نسج طيفٍ واسع من الموروثات الموسيقية المشتركة بين الثقافات التركية والعربية والفارسية والآشورية والكردية والسريانية.

وعلى مدى قرون، أسهمت هذه التفاعلات في تشكيل ذاكرة صوتية جماعية لا تزال تتردّد أصداؤها متجاوزةً الحدود السياسية والجغرافية التي فرّقت هذه الشعوب في مراحل لاحقة.

يسعى المؤدّي في راست إلى توسيع آفاق تقليد التقاسيم، وذلك من خلال دمج أنماط إيقاعية جديدة وسلالم لحنية مستمَدّة من مصادر ثقافية وجغرافية متنوعة.

وعبر الارتجال، تُعاد صياغة هذه العناصر وتأويلها، لتُفسح المجال أمام التجريب والحوار بين الماضي والحاضر.

فماذا عسانا أن نسمع في هذا اللقاء؟ يدعو راست المؤدّيَ والجمهورَ معاً إلى اكتشاف الإجابة.

نبذة تعريفية

طارق أبو سلامة (مواليد ١٩٩٠ القدس، فلسطين)، مؤلّف موسيقي وكاتب أغاني فلسطيني، يقيم في ميلانو بإيطاليا منذ عام ٢٠٢٢. تتمحور ممارسته الموسيقية حول استكشاف الأشكال الموسيقية وتقاطعاتها بحثاً عن مزيدٍ من أوجه التعبير.

عمل طارق مؤلّفاً موسيقياً للعديد من الأفلام والعروض المسرحية الفلسطينية، من بينها: التقارير عن سارة وسليم (٢٠١٨)، وعلى الشاطئ (٢٠٢١).

بين عامَي ٢٠١٥ و ٢٠٢١ طوّر طارق مشروعاً لكتابة الأغاني في فلسطين، إذ تعاون مع مجموعات موسيقية متعددة وشباب من مختلف الفئات العمرية لصياغة قصص شفهية في قالب أغانٍ، قدّمها بنفسه أو عبر هذه المجموعات.

يعكف طارق حالياً على إعداد وتقديم حفلات موسيقية تستحضر مفاهيم صوتية وموسيقية بعينها، كان لها أثرٌ بالغ في تشكّل عدد من الأشكال والتقاليد الموسيقية، مستخدماً الارتجال فضاءً لاستكشاف هذه المفاهيم وتجريبها.

Rast is a solo performance that, through the expressive voice of the oud, explores the traditional form of taqasim—a distinctive mode of improvisation at the heart of Eastern musical heritage.

This form is remarkable for its ability to weave together a wide spectrum of musical traditions shared among Turkish, Arab, Persian, Assyrian, Kurdish, and Syriac cultures.

Over centuries, these interactions have shaped a collective sonic memory that continues to resonate beyond the political and geographic boundaries that later divided these peoples.

In Rast, the performer seeks to expand the taqasim tradition by integrating new rhythmic patterns and melodic scales drawn from diverse cultural and geographical sources.

Through improvisation, these elements are reinterpreted, creating a space for experimentation and dialogue between past and present.

What might we hear through this encounter? Rast invites both performer and audience to discover the answer together.

Bio

Tareq Abu Salameh (b. 1990, Jerusalem, Palestine), is a Palestinian composer and songwriter, living in Milan - Italy since 2022. In his music practice he is focusing on exploring musical forms and combinations to discover more of expressions. Tareq has been working as film and theatre scorer for many Palestinian’s films and theatre’s performance, such as, The Reports on Sarah and Saleem (2018), By the Sea (2021).

From 2015 to 2021 Tareq developed a project for song writing in Palestine, he worked with several music groups and young adults to form oral stories in songs that presented by himself or the groups.

At present Tareq is working on creating and performing concerts that present particular sound and musical concepts, that has influence over the formation of several musical forms and traditions, using improvisations as a space for experimenting these concepts.

تعدّ جلسات القُبّة استكشافًا للعلاقة بين الصوت والمكان، منطلقًا من الخصائص المعمارية والصوتية الفريدة لقبة معرض رشيد كرامي الدولي غير المكتملة في طرابلس، لبنان.

صُمّم هذا الفضاء عام ١٩٦٢ على يد المعماري الشهير أوسكار نيماير، إلا أنه لم يحقق هدفه ضمن خطة اقتصادية لامركزية للمدينة، وبقي شاهدًا على إمكانات لم تتحقق، في حالة من التدهور.

مع اندلاع الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية، توقفت أعمال البناء في القبة، مما تركها دون معالجة صوتية، وأنتج صدىً نادرًا ومؤثرًا داخل الفضاء. منذ عام ٢٠١٠ يستخدم الفنان السمعي البصري والقيّم الفني فراس الحلّاق هذا الموقع كمعلم لاستكشاف السرديات المعلنة وغير المعلنة للمدينة، من خلال تجارب صوتية تربط بين الصوت والمكان والذاكرة.

ما بدأ كاهتمام فردي تطوّر إلى تجربة جماعية، حيث قام كل فنان بتكييف ممارسته مع الخصائص الصوتية الفريدة والتاريخ المتراكم للموقع. تتردد أصداء كل جلسة تسجيل داخل جدرانه الخرسانية. ومن خلال استعادة هذا الهيكل المنسي وإعادة تخيّل إمكاناته، يذيب العمل الحدود بين الماضي والحاضر، وبين الفردي والجماعي.

تدعو جلسات القُبّة المستمعين إلى تجربة مشتركة للمكان عبر الصوت.

The Dome Sessions is an exploration of sound and space, emerging from the distinct architectural and acoustic features of the unfinished Dome of the Rachid Karami International Fair in Tripoli, Lebanon.

Designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1962, the space never fulfilled its intended purpose as part of a decentralized economic plan for the city and instead remains a relic of unrealized potential in decay.

When the Lebanese Civil War began, construction on the Dome ceased, leaving it acoustically untreated. This created a haunting and rare reverb within the space. Since 2010, audiovisual artist and curator Firas El Hallak has used the Dome as a landmark to reflect the told and untold stories of the city through sonic experiments that intertwine sound, space, and memory.

What began as an individual curiosity evolved into a collaborative experiment, with each artist adapting their approach to the Dome's distinctive sound and layered history. Every recorded session reverberates within its concrete walls. By reclaiming this forgotten structure and reinventing its possibilities, the work dissolves the boundaries between past and present, personal and communal.

The Dome Sessions invites listeners to a shared experience of space through sound.

بشار حوراني، تليه ADAN، يقدّمان مجموعة من الأسطوانات مباشرة عبر راديو الحارة من مجلس العجب.

بشار حوراني “7orany” يبلغ من العمر 36 عامًا، وُلد ونشأ في حيفا، فلسطين. يعمل كمصمّم غرافيك ويدير مطبعة عائلية منذ عام 1975. بدأ شغفه بالموسيقى قبل بضع سنوات، حين بدأ بجمع أسطوانات الفينيل لمختلف أنواع الموسيقى من أنحاء العالم.

ADAN هي قيّمة معارض ومعمارية ودي جي فلسطينية من القدس، تقيم حاليًا في لندن. تتحرّك مجموعاتها الموسيقية بين المينيمال هاوس، والإلكترو، والأصوات الإلكترونية ذات الإيقاع العميق، موازنةً بين النبرات الداكنة وإيقاع الرقص.

إلى جانب ممارستها الموسيقية، تعمل على تنظيم المعارض والبرامج العامة والمشاريع الصوتية التي تستكشف الذاكرة والانتماء والسرديات الثقافية. وقد تعاونت مع منصات منها راديو الحارة، راديو نرد، استوديو أصواتنا، وكباريت حيفا.

Bashar Horany “7orany” is 36 years old born and raised in Haifa Palestine, a graphic designer and owner of a family print shop since 1975. His passion for music started a few years ago when he started collecting vinyl records of all sorts of music from all around the world.

ADAN is a Palestinian curator, architect, and DJ from Jerusalem, currently based in London. Her sets move through minimal house, electro, and bass-leaning electronic sounds, balancing darker textures with groove and dancefloor energy.

Alongside her music practice, she works across exhibitions, public programmes, and sound-based projects exploring memory, belonging, and cultural storytelling. She has collaborated with platforms including Radio Alhara, Radio Nard, Aswātna Studio, and Kabareet Haifa.

تجمع هذه الأفلام الثلاثة بين الأسطورة والفولكلور والتقاليد الشعبية المحلية، لتخيّل أشكال جديدة للتمثيل والتشكّلات الاجتماعية في فلسطين. تنطلق هذه الأعمال من أرشيف متخيَّل وغير معروف، يُستعاد من خلاله ما انقطع من الذاكرة، ويُعاد ربطه بمخيال لم يتبلور بعد.

من خلال العمل على الحكايات الشعبية والأغاني والحركات اليومية، يسعى هذا العمل إلى ابتكار صيغة بصرية وسردية تظلّ مرتبطة بالأرض والطقوس، وبأشكال من المعرفة غير المرئية المتجذّرة في الهوامش.

For the Wonder Cabinet's film screening program this week, we will hold simultaneous screenings of Palestinian filmmaker Noor Abed's films at both the Wonder Cabinet and Bayn Al Nakhlatayn in Jericho, as part of their Collective Earth Archive program.

Following the screening at Bayn al Nakhlaytan, Noor Abed will hold a Q&A discussion, also to be streamed at the Wonder Cabinet. The screenings are open to the public at both locations.

The three films combine mythology, folklore, and local popular traditions to imagine a new possibility for representational and social formations in Palestine. The films can be seen as a historical document from an unknown archive, retrieving a memory while connecting us to an imaginary that has yet to unfold.

Working with folktales, songs, and daily movement, this body of work seeks to create a new form that remains closely attuned to the land, to rituals, and to the invisible knowledge embedded in the peripheral.

Penelope (2014)

Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, the film looks at the role and relevance of mythology to the present and to the collective imaginary. Filmed in Palestine in 2014, the piece reimagines Penelope as a solitary female figure, weaving a quilt made of dead fish. Through a continuous act of sewing, she is returning to a past memory simultaneously, evoking a poignant meditation on displacement and dispossession. The work attempts to reflect a reality other than the one history offers. Here, myth could be seen as a collective dream and public imagination.

Choreographed scenes based on documented folktales from Palestine, the film aims to create a new aesthetic form to re-awaken latent stories based around water wells and their connection to communal rituals around notions of disappearance, mourning, and death. our songs were ready for all the wars to come explores the critical stance of ‘folklore’ as a source of knowledge, and its possible connection to alternative social and representational models in Palestine. How can ‘folklore’ become a common emancipatory tool for people to overturn dominant discourses, reclaim their history and land, and rewrite reality as they know it?

The only narration in the film is a song, which is sung by Palestinian singer Maya Khaldi. Its lyrics are a collage of different folk tales. Captured through mediums of film and sound, situated stories are archived and represented, creating a context that explores the capacity of social formation, and the possibility of recalling a memory that is capable of decentralizing images of fixity; a memory that is liberated from monuments.

A Night We Held Between (2024)

The film centers around “Song for The Fighters,” which was found at the sonic archive of the Popular Art Center Palestine. Through the layers of the song, in a labyrinth of sounds and sites, the film conjures history as a permanent present tense, a collective and imaginative act.

The film was shot in ancient sites in Palestine—caves, carved holes, underground passages, and wild valleys—the land becomes our main character. It traverses beyond the first layer of visibility to reveal a vast, hidden world similar to the one we know. Throughout the film, scenes intertwine rituals and narratives of community and resistance into everyday representations of social life in Palestine, thus emphasizing the role of collective rhythmic movement and the potential impact that shared feelings can evoke in creating and sustaining a community.

Biography

Noor Abed works at the intersection of performance and film. Her practice examines notions of social choreographies and collective formations, combining forms of the ‘staged’ and the ‘documentary’. Abed attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in Νew York in 2015-16, and the Home Workspace Program (HWP) at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut 2016-17. She was a fellow at the Raw Material Company in Dakar in 2019, and in 2020, she co-founded, with Lara Khaldi, the School of Intrusions, an independent educational collective in Ramallah, Palestine. Abed was an assistant curator in documenta fifteen, Kassel 2021-22, an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam 2022-24. She was awarded the Han Nefkens Foundation/ Museu Tàpies Film Production Grant in 2022, and her film 'A Night We Held Between' was selected as a first-prize winner of the e-flux Film Award 2024. Abed is the Grand prize recipient of the 36th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts, Her book 'Stars at Midday' was published by Occasional Papers in October 2024.
