Description: This is a two-part workshop for documentary filmmakers where participants will learn how to develop written materials for their documentary project, followed by an overview of the international documentary funding landscape. This workshop is open to all levels of emerging and established filmmakers. It is encouraged to be working on a project currently, but not necessary. Please bring your written materials if you have them.

The workshop is open to 10 participants and is facilitated in English by Madelaine Russo as part of the Spring Sessions residency at the Wonder Cabinet.

Madelaine is a development writer and consultant for international documentary projects and focuses on supporting filmmakers who are anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, and from the global southern majority. In her decade-long tenure as a film industry professional, she has produced meeting, lab, and mentorship programs for filmmakers all over the world. In parallel, she is studying for her BFA in ceramics and is an at-home personal support worker.

On its second participation in LGW?, Wonder Cabinet brings to Utrecht a group of artists with original works created as part of Sounds of Places, a research and residency project dedicated to the sonic identity of places.

A spatial sonic narrative placing the audience within the Cremisan Valley, one of the last remaining accessible green spaces around Bethlehem. Sounds of Places artists Yara Asmar, Alabaster DePlume and Ibrahim Owais will recreate and transform the valley’s sonic landscape in a live performance. An extension of the sonic analogies which arose in the artists’ encounters with the place, carrying the sounds of the valley into new spaces and times as a way to listen, collectively.

Otro Sol is a group of real and invented characters trapped in a film. It is also a purgatory of retired thieves that takes place on the coast of the Atacama Desert. The film is circular and seeks to invent and verify the myth of Alberto Cándia, a Chilean international thief who robbed the Cathedral of Cadiz in Andalucia in the late 1980s.

Hania Rani is a multi-award winning composer and pianist who moves effortlessly between the worlds of classical and experimental music. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Non Fiction is her first piano concerto and examines the horrors of war in Ukraine and Gaza, and how closely we can 'observe' and 'hear' them through modern media. Italian photographer and architect Antonio Ottomanelli will lead a three-day photography workshop at the Wonder Cabinet in Bethlehem, open to students, photographers, and artists. Participants will explore the surrounding landscape and document essential elements of their daily lives through guided walks and listening-based exercises.

Serving as a bridge between Corato, Italy and Bethlehem, Palestine, the workshop continues the work developed with Palestinian and Italian high school students in Corato. Each Corato project has been transformed into a “kit”: a visual or sound fragment, a constraint, and an action prompt. Local participants will activate and reinterpret the kits. Through daytime and nighttime walks, soundwalks, micro-labs, and collective listening sessions, these kits become starting points for intuitive exploration of social and environmental spaces.

The final works - including photo and audio series, diptychs, and temporary signage - contribute to the project’s wider narrative and “soft infrastructure,” grounded in the values of care, justice, memory, and freedom. Together, they form a platform for transgenerational and translocal exchange.

Join us for a screening of short films by Lindsay McIntyre centered around indigeneity, colonial eraser, the (re)discovery of personal and familial lineages, and the presence of these themes and practices within and on (primarily) Nunavit land.

Lindsay McIntyre is a filmmaker and multi-disciplinary artist of Inuit and settler descent working primarily with analogue film. She has an MFA in Film Production from Concordia University and a BFA in Painting + Drawing from the University of Alberta. Her multiple award-winning short documentaries, experimental films and expanded cinema performances are often process-based and for some she also makes her own 16mm film with handmade silver gelatin emulsion. Her films circle themes of portraiture, place, form and personal histories.
